July 27th, Karachi – WomenInTechPK hosted the Google I/O Recap 2019 at The Pearls University. The full-day event was designed to bring together female technologists of the city, including members from WomenInTechPK and students and graduates of CodeGirls. The day’s agenda included keynotes and tech talks, hands-on learning with experts, Google’s mSite certification workshop and product demos from local entrepreneurs and techies. The event was attended by more than 50 female technologists including both students and professionals.
The event started with a welcome note of Faiza Yousuf (Founder – WomenInTechPK). She welcomed all the participants and talked about her community and the agenda of the event.
Mashhood Rastgar (CTO – Sastaticket.pk) gave the first keynote at the event. He spoke on “PWAs: Mobile for the next billion users” and discussed what they are and how to get started on creating one for your business.
Next up were Neelam Raheel (Project Manager – Genetech Solutions) and Muslim Raza (Solutions Architect – Genetech Solutions) who gave a hands-on Codelab on Dialogflow. The session was full of learning and participants asked questions and worked on a few prototypes to polish their newly acquired skills.
In parallel, there were Product Demos and Lightning Talks happenings where Anum Akhtar talked about “Flutter Driver – The Final Destination“. Her talk proceeded with another lightning talk by Asra Shoaib. Her topic was “Working From Home – The Unknown Side“, She discussed the struggles and benefits of working remotely.
Sadaf Iqbal (Founder – Next Generation Analytics), talked about “AI Commercialization or AGI“. Her talk was the highlight of the day and was really well received by the audience.
Two of our local GDEs, Mashhood Rastgar and Ahsan Ayaz conducted Google’s mSite certification workshop, participants learned the content and attempted the exam to become Google Certified Developers.
Hafsa Jehangir threw light on the topic “Starting a Freelancing Career and its Challenges“. She addressed the possible ways of starting a career in freelancing, Furthermore, Asra Rizwan addressed the audience on “How to find opportunities and build your portfolio as a student freelancer“. She discussed various ways in which a student can develop projects and add them to the portfolio which ultimately help to get a freelance job. Rabia Asif gave an awesome talk on “Design Thinking“. She talked about a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving difficult problems.
Ahsan Ayaz (Software Architect – Modus Create) spoke on “Angular v8: Features and Changes“. He mentioned a bunch of workflow and performance improvements in Angular 8.
A number of products were also showcased at the conference, including:
- Taste Of Blue showcased their application that uses AI to facilitate their users in finding the desired luxury lifestyle services.
- Precision Bird presented their product and talked about how it uses AI to solve aerial mapping and modeling problems.
- TechTree demonstrated their robotics kits to the audience which have the potential to make kids fall in love with STEM!
- Aurat Raaj introduced their chatbot and how it is creating an impact in the area of reproductive health for women.
- Social Champ‘s team presented their awesome social media management tool and how it can help you with your digital reach.
- WonderTree showcased their AR-based games which are built for therapy and education of children with special needs.
Faiza Yousuf presented a token of appreciation and thanked all the amazing speakers who spent time with the participants and helped them technically with excellent advice. Shamim Rajani (COO – Genetech Solutions, Founder – CodeGirls) concluded the event by an ending note. She thanked all sponsors and partners, including 10Pearls University (venue partner), Musavvir – By Maria Homaee (photography partner), Genetech Solutions (tech partner), and CodeGirls by ConsulNet Corporation (community partner).
All participants and speakers received Google Schwag, enjoyed the food, and networked with each other.
