Today, we are featuring Naseem Kouser. Read on to learn more about her work and get inspired.
1. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, your education, and your work.
I’m Naseem Kouser, currently serving as a Lead Software Engineer at Folio3 Pvt Ltd since September 2022. My journey into the world of technology began in 2016 after graduating with a degree in Computer Science. Interestingly, this was a by-chance career for me not by choice, because as a child, I had always dreamed of pursuing a career in medical sciences. However, as I grew, I found myself drawn more to logical puzzles and math than the lengthy and boring biology labs and then a small margin in grades ultimately steered me away from medicine and towards a degree in Computer Science.
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with several IT companies, specializing mainly in ERPs and SAAS applications. Among them, I found immense joy in working on applications like web.hr, smartpupils.com, linentech.net, and repairdesk.co. These experiences were pivotal in uncovering my genuine passion for the field.
I’m passionate about using technology to solve problems and come up with new ideas. My transition from a medical student to a Lead Software Engineer reflects my dedication to learning and growing in the tech world as I always found joy in coding and problem-solving. It’s been quite a journey, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
2. What are your future plans/aspirations? How will it impact the community/society/your team/your project?
I aim to become a software architect, focusing on big data. I want to use large datasets to create innovative solutions that make tasks easier and more efficient. This will benefit my team and projects by promoting creativity and problem-solving skills. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to advancements in various areas.
3. Please brag about your career accomplishments. What are the things you are proud of?
I’ve always found pride in breaking barriers, especially as the only female developer in my first job. In a male-dominated industry, this experience fueled my determination to succeed despite the odds. Recently, achieving the role of Lead Software Engineer stands as a testament to my dedication and perseverance. It shows the hard work and commitment I’ve poured into my career. Each milestone has reinforced my passion for technology and my ability to thrive in challenging environments.
4. What has been your best education/career decision, and why?
My best career decision was embracing a field I hadn’t initially chosen. While I didn’t enter the tech industry by choice, I now consider it a blessing. Over time, I’ve developed a deep love for my career and the opportunities it offers. The tech industry has empowered me to become an independent woman in just a few short years. Embracing this field has not only opened doors to exciting opportunities but has also allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.
5. What are the best lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that life begins outside of one’s comfort zone. In both personal and professional realms. It’s like taking on new challenges in both life and work. In the tech world, staying curious and learning every day is key to staying ahead.
6. Which woman inspires you and why?
Every woman inspires me because I believe each one is a superwoman in her own way, accomplishing amazing things every day. However, one woman who has always stood out to me is Benazir Bhutto. Since my childhood, I’ve admired her charismatic personality and the strength she demonstrated as a leader. She paved the way for women in politics and fought tirelessly for democracy.
7. Do you think Pakistan has changed as a society in terms of accepting career-oriented women? What needs to change to help more women come forward?
Certainly, Pakistan has made significant strides in accepting career-oriented women, but there’s room for improvement. We must enhance access to education and job opportunities while implementing supportive workplace policies like flexible hours. Additionally, promoting gender diversity awareness will foster a more inclusive environment, allowing women to excel professionally and contribute significantly to society.
8. What will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you?
In today’s TikTok-driven culture, it’s vital for the upcoming generation to balance online trends with real-world readiness. While social media showcases an idealized version of life, practical skills and resilience are essential for navigating the complexities of the real world. Empowering young women with the tools to thrive in both digital and tangible environments is key to their future success.
9. What would it be if you could change one thing about the tech industry/business?
If I could change one thing about the tech industry, it would be to shift the mindset that women are also as capable as men in this field. Despite significant progress, there’s still a lingering misconception that women are better suited for certain professions like healthcare while being less competent in tech-related roles.
10. How can WomenInTechPK help you and other women?
WomenInTechPK plays a vital role in promoting women in the tech industry. Continuing to provide platforms for networking, workshops, and mentorship would greatly benefit us. Thank you for this incredible platform and for pushing us to the forefront of the tech community.
